The Atlanta Falcons' defensive woes continue to mount as they place two key players on the injured reserve list, shaking up their already struggling defense. But it's the names on the list that will raise eyebrows.
The Falcons have announced that defensive lineman Zach Harrison and rookie cornerback Billy Bowman Jr. are now on IR, sidelining them for a minimum of four games. This news comes as a significant blow to a defense that has been a bright spot in an otherwise challenging season for the 3-7 Falcons.
And here's where it gets intriguing:
Harrison, in his third year, was enjoying a breakout season with 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, tying him with fellow defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus for the team lead. His absence will be felt, especially after he missed Weeks 8 and 9 with a knee injury, only to return and make an impact in Week 10.
But the story of Bowman, a rookie, is where things get even more captivating. As a fourth-round pick, he impressed during training camp and won the starting nickelback job. In six starts, he's recorded an interception, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Unfortunately, an Achilles injury during practice has now put his promising start on hold.
The Falcons did activate linebacker Divine Deablo, who returns from a broken forearm, and signed undrafted rookie cornerback Cobee Bryant to the active roster. Safety Jammie Robinson and wide receiver Dylan Drummond were also elevated for the upcoming game against the New Orleans Saints.
A silver lining in this cloud of injuries? Perhaps, but the loss of Harrison and Bowman could significantly impact the Falcons' defensive strategy.
