Ancient Healing Hands: Amber's Journey to Kiama Downs

Amber Pickering, the owner of South Coast Acupuncture and Herbs, has a captivating story of how she discovered the ancient art of acupuncture and Chinese herbs. It all began when she was in her early 20s, and since then, her journey has been a continuous exploration of healing.

Initially, Amber pursued a career in corporate events, but her passion for health and wellness led her back to academia in her early 30s. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which ultimately led to the establishment of her clinic in Kiama in 2020.

Despite the clinic's success, the COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges. Amber shared, "That [the clinic] was doing really well and I loved it, but like all small businesses, we hit a slow period with COVID."

During this time, Amber took on a new role at an Acupuncture Pregnancy and Fertility clinic in Sydney. Here, she learned about fertility and pregnancy acupuncture from a scientist-turned-Chinese-medicine-practitioner. This clinic, established 16 years ago, primarily worked with IVF doctors and specialists, focusing on optimizing egg quality and supporting implantation during and after the IVF cycle.

The University of Melbourne's recent findings support the benefits of acupuncture for reproductive health. The study states, "acupuncture may increase blood flow to reproductive organs, including the lining of the uterus (endometrium) and the ovaries."

Amber emphasizes the importance of reducing stress for her patients, many of whom are trying to conceive after multiple attempts. She explains, "A major thing is to reduce stress because these are people who want to be parents, and the whole process of IVF or trying to conceive becomes very stressful. A lot of it is just preparing the mind and body."

Now, Amber has reopened her clinic in Kiama Downs, eager to reconnect with old clients and meet new ones. She has gained extensive experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions, sports injuries, fertility and pregnancy acupuncture, and general wellbeing. Her personal experiences with stress and anxiety have also shaped her practice.

Amber accepts all health funds for rebates, and some health funds even reset their extras at the end of the year. For those seeking rejuvenation and a fresh start, South Coast Acupuncture and Herbs is the ideal place to turn. Amber suggests, "It’s a good time to reset for the new year. This time of year is quite busy and stressful, so acupuncture and cupping are excellent for removing toxins and promoting circulation throughout the body."
