OD stands apart from your typical horror title, and even Kojima seems unsure about its fate.

Hideo Kojima’s Xbox-published horror venture OD sounds absolutely unconventional. In a fresh interview, the Death Stranding creator not only admits he can’t spell out exactly what OD is, but also concedes he doesn’t know if it will ultimately succeed.
“We’ve built stealth games and delivery-focused experiences that felt unlike anything before, yet—when you break down the mechanics—they resembled other games,” Kojima Productions’ head told ananweb (translated by Automaton). Beyond Death Stranding 1 and 2, Kojima is widely recognized for the Metal Gear franchise.
For OD, which leans into horror, he explained the studio aims to reshape the service model from its foundations, calling the endeavor “quite challenging.”
Nonetheless, the OD team argues the latest trailer is brimming with clues. “If you keep thinking about it, you might figure it out,” he teased.
OD was unveiled in 2023, though Kojima didn’t reveal many specifics at the time. The project involves Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer, with additional input from director Jordan Peele, known for Get Out and Nope.
Kojima described OD as “a game and at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media,” leaving interpretation open. He recently acknowledged that many people will dislike OD, and he’s okay with that in the near term.
Last month, OD actor Udo Kier passed away; Kojima honored him as “an icon of his time.”
