Marburg Virus Outbreak Confirmed in Ethiopia: Africa CDC Responds (2025)

A deadly outbreak has struck Ethiopia, and the world is watching closely. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has officially acknowledged the confirmation of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Jinka, located in the Southern Region of Ethiopia. This isn't just another health scare; Marburg is a severe and often fatal illness, a viral hemorrhagic fever in the same family as Ebola.

As of November 14, 2025, nine cases have been reported. Clinical samples rigorously tested at Ethiopia’s National Reference Laboratory have confirmed the presence of the Marburg virus. But here's where it gets controversial... The virus strain detected bears a striking resemblance to those previously identified in East Africa. Is this a new outbreak, or a resurgence of an older strain? Further epidemiological investigations and detailed laboratory analyses are currently underway to pinpoint the exact source and characteristics of this outbreak.

On November 12, 2025, the initial alert regarding a suspected viral hemorrhagic fever was promptly shared with the Africa CDC, triggering an immediate response.

The Federal Ministry of Health, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), and regional health authorities have swiftly activated comprehensive response measures. These include enhanced surveillance to detect any new cases, thorough field investigations to trace the origin of the outbreak, strengthened infection prevention and control measures within healthcare facilities, and proactive community engagement efforts to educate the public and dispel misinformation. The Africa CDC commends this rapid and transparent response, which has been crucial in enabling early confirmation and containment efforts.

And this is the part most people miss... The Africa CDC has been a steadfast partner of EPHI for years, working to bolster Ethiopia’s molecular diagnostic and genomic surveillance capacity. These are critical capabilities, and they were immediately deployed in response to this outbreak. Through this vital collaboration, the Africa CDC has provided state-of-the-art genome-sequencing equipment, essential sequencing reagents, PCR detection kits (including highly specific Marburg assays), and extensive training for laboratory personnel in crucial areas like genome sequencing, bioinformatics, biosafety protocols, proper PPE use, and safe sample handling procedures. This investment in infrastructure and training is now paying off in a big way.

The core genomics facility at EPHI has been significantly strengthened by the Africa CDC, in collaboration with key partners such as the Global Fund, WHO, and the UK Health Security Agency. This collaborative effort is not just about responding to this specific outbreak; it's about enhancing Ethiopia’s overall outbreak readiness and ensuring the country is better prepared to face future health threats.

Furthermore, the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), a leading Ethiopian research institution, has also seen its research and genomics capacity significantly enhanced through Africa CDC’s support. This includes the provision of cutting-edge equipment, essential reagents, and highly targeted training programs. AHRI is, therefore, exceptionally well-positioned to play a central role during this Marburg outbreak, contributing its expertise to diagnostics, research, and potential treatment strategies. This response presents a unique opportunity not only to improve care for affected communities but also to generate critical innovations in Marburg prevention, diagnostics, and treatment. Could this outbreak be the catalyst for a breakthrough in fighting this deadly disease?

To further enhance coordination and optimize resources, the Africa CDC and the Ministry of Health will integrate Marburg virus response efforts with ongoing mpox preparedness and surveillance activities. This joint approach is designed to accelerate early detection of both diseases and reduce the risk of regional spread, ensuring a more efficient and effective allocation of resources.

Africa CDC Director-General, H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya, is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Health of Ethiopia to assess additional support needs and reinforce cross-border readiness with neighboring countries. This is crucial to prevent the outbreak from spreading beyond Ethiopia's borders. The Africa CDC will continue to work closely with the Government of Ethiopia and its partners to ensure a rapid, coordinated, and effective response to this emerging health crisis.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

What do you think about the Africa CDC's approach to this outbreak? Is enough being done to contain the spread, or should more resources be allocated? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
