Amidst the tumultuous landscape of post-2024 American politics, where Donald Trump's second term has intensified the 'America First' chorus, a surprising new voice of dissent emerges from an unexpected 'desi' family. Nalin Haley, the 24-year-old son of former U.N. Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, is rapidly rising through the Republican ranks as a populist provocateur. His hardline immigration stance, advocating for the end of H-1B visas, limits on foreign students, and bans on naturalized citizens holding office, has sparked a heated debate. Is he a nepotistic outlier betraying his immigrant roots, or does he embody the raw frustrations of Gen-Z conservatives, many of whom share his immigrant background? Born just five days before 9/11 in South Carolina, Nalin grew up in the shadow of his mother's political ascent. His Sikh grandfather, Ajit Singh Randhawa, who immigrated from Ludhiana in 1969, was an agriculture scientist building an academic career at Voorhees College during an era of anti-immigrant sentiment. While Nikki Haley embraced Christianity in 1996 and continued practicing her Sikh faith, her father remained a practicing Sikh until his death in 2024. Nalin, however, was baptized in the Methodist church at birth and later converted to Catholicism during college. In recent interviews, Nalin has expressed restrictionist views on immigration, marking a stark political divergence from his mother, a polished internationalist who has long championed merit-based legal immigration. He has called for ending the H-1B program and capping foreign students, even suggesting that some are spies for foreign governments. He also wants to stop legal immigration entirely. In an interview with Tucker Carlson, he insisted that naturalized citizens should not hold public office, stating that 'growing up here is a big part of understanding the country.' He also railed against H-1B visas, claiming that foreign workers are 'taking jobs that Americans can do' in a fragile economy, citing his own friends who, despite having great degrees, cannot find jobs. While Nikki Haley has remained silent on her son's views, immigration defenders are appalled by what they perceive as a betrayal.
