A dire situation is unfolding in Odisha's education system, with over 1,500 teaching positions left unfilled in the prestigious Adarsha Vidyalayas. This crisis, as revealed by the School & Mass Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, has left these model schools struggling to maintain their academic standards and administrative efficiency.
The Numbers Don't Lie: A Troubling Reality
Out of the 315 sanctioned Principal posts, an astonishing 261 remain vacant. This alarming statistic has a ripple effect on the overall functioning of these schools, impacting everything from academic planning to day-to-day operations. But here's where it gets even more concerning: the Vice-Principal positions, crucial for academic oversight, are also severely understaffed, with 185 posts vacant across the state. This means that a significant number of Adarsha Vidyalayas are operating without the essential leadership needed to maintain discipline, supervise effectively, and execute academic programs smoothly.
The shortage doesn't stop at the administrative level. The teaching cadre is also significantly affected, with 883 Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) and 665 Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) positions unfilled. These vacancies directly disrupt the teaching-learning process, particularly in core subjects like Science, Mathematics, and English, where students rely heavily on specialized instructors.
Many schools are reportedly resorting to guest faculty or overburdening existing teachers, creating academic gaps and compromising the quality of education. The Minister's response addressed the status of all 315 Adarsha Vidyalayas across 30 districts, emphasizing that this issue is widespread and not confined to any specific region. He assured that steps are being taken to expedite recruitment and strengthen the human resources of these model schools.
