Get ready for a cleaner, greener summer in the Bay of Islands! The much-loved mobile rubbish barge is back, and it's here to make a difference. A floating solution to a pressing problem, this barge is a game-changer for boaties and locals alike.
This innovative service, a joint effort between the Northland Regional Council, Far North District Council, and the Department of Conservation, is supported by the dedicated team at Northland Waste. It's a unique approach to keeping our beloved Bay pristine and free from unwanted rubbish.
But here's where it gets controversial: this barge isn't just for locals. It's a service for all boaties, whether you're a resident or a visitor. By offering an on-water solution, the barge aims to ensure that the Bay of Islands remains a beautiful, rubbish-free haven for everyone to enjoy.
The barge will be operational from Monday, December 29th, and will continue its summer journey until Friday, January 30th, 2026. However, this service is weather-dependent, so keep an eye on the forecast! Generally, you can expect the barge to be out and about on Mondays and Fridays, but it might adjust its schedule based on demand and capacity.
On operational days, the barge will start its journey at Urupukapuka Island campsites from 9 am to 10 am. Then, it will moor near the south-eastern end of Moturua Island from 10:30 am to 1 pm. As we head towards the end of January, the hours might reduce, so plan your visits accordingly.
Now, let's talk fees. A flat rate of $10 per rubbish bag applies, no matter if you use a pre-paid or plain bag. For recyclables, the cost depends on the quantity and cleanliness, typically ranging from $3 to $5. And here's a friendly reminder: oversized bags and dirty recycling will incur additional charges, so let's keep it clean!
Safety first! Users are kindly asked to follow the guidance of the barge staff. There's a limit of four people on the barge at any given time, and footwear is a must for health and safety reasons.
For those who prefer shore-based facilities, there are options available too. From Friday, December 26th, to Thursday, January 29th, you can visit the daily facilities at Ōpua, located by the fuel jetty at the Far North Holdings car park, from 8 am to 5 pm.
Additionally, a Rāwhiti site at Kaingahoa campground, Kaingahoa Bay, Rāwhiti Rd, will be open daily from 8 am to 4 pm from December 20th, 2025, to February 28th, 2026. From March 1st, 2026, to December 19th, 2026, the site will be open daily from 9 am to midday.
Both the Opua and Rāwhiti sites will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so plan your waste management accordingly.
And this is the part most people miss: a pop-up rubbish and recycling centre will be installed at Russell Wharf! This centre will be located at the end of the wharf from December 26th to January 11th, with operating hours from 8 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 5 pm. A flat rate of $8 per rubbish bag applies, and recyclables are free of charge.
So, whether you're a local or a visitor, a boatie or a landlubber, let's all do our part to keep the Bay of Islands beautiful. Remember, a little effort goes a long way towards preserving our natural treasures. For more information, visit www.nrc.govt.nz/rubbishbarge. Let's make this summer a clean and green success!
