And this is the part most people miss: Carter paid homage to Kolchak in several ways. He named an X-Files character after Richard Matheson, the writer behind the Kolchak movies' teleplays. Furthermore, he brought Carl Kolchak himself, Darren McGavin, into The X-Files to play retired FBI agent Arthur Dales, creating a full-circle moment for fans.
