Verstappen's F1 Title Hopes on the Line in Las Vegas! Elimination Scenarios Explained (2025)

Max Verstappen's F1 title hopes are on the line in Las Vegas, and here's why. The championship could be over before the checkered flag waves.

After a promising comeback post-summer break, Max's momentum has taken a hit, and his chances of claiming the world championship are now hanging by a thread. Let's dive into the numbers and explore how this could play out.

Following the Dutch Grand Prix, Max trailed the leader, Oscar Piastri, by a significant 104 points. However, over the subsequent five races, Verstappen managed to close the gap, with Lando Norris taking over the lead from Mexico City onwards. Verstappen's impressive performance, coupled with some self-inflicted wounds from the McLaren drivers, saw him gain 68 points on the leader.

But here's where it gets controversial... Norris's win in Mexico dealt a blow to Max's resurgence, and the Sao Paulo weekend further widened the gap as Norris claimed both the sprint and grand prix victories. While Verstappen managed to reduce the points difference with Piastri to just 25, his deficit to the championship lead grew from 36 to 49 points.

After the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the 22nd race of the season, there will still be 58 points up for grabs. The Qatar Grand Prix, with its sprint format, offers a chance to gain up to 33 points, while a victory in Abu Dhabi awards a hefty 25 points. The math is simple: if Verstappen exits Las Vegas 58 points or more behind Norris, his title hopes are dashed.

Even if the gap widens in Vegas without a mathematical elimination, Verstappen's chances of a final tie in points would be slim to none.

And this is the part most people miss... The regulations state that in the event of a tie in points, the driver with the most grand prix wins takes the title. Currently, Verstappen has five wins to Norris's seven, and five second-place finishes compared to Norris's eight. If the gap widens further in Las Vegas, it could mean Norris clinches the title even if Verstappen wins the last two GPs.

The Elimination Scenarios:

Verstappen needs to avoid losing nine points to Norris in Las Vegas to stay in the running. Here are the possible outcomes:

  • Norris wins (25 points) with Verstappen no higher than third (15 points or fewer). This scenario has occurred six times this season (Monaco, Austria, Britain, Hungary, Mexico, and Sao Paulo).
  • Norris finishes second (18 points) with Verstappen no higher than sixth (8 points or fewer). This happened once in 2025 (Spanish GP).
  • Norris takes third (15 points) with Verstappen no higher than seventh (6 points or fewer). This hasn't occurred yet.
  • Norris finishes fourth (12 points) with Verstappen no higher than ninth (2 points or fewer). Also yet to happen.
  • Norris claims fifth (10 points) with Verstappen no higher than 10th (1 point or nothing). This scenario is yet to play out.

In all other cases, Verstappen remains in the title fight until Qatar.

Can Norris Win the Championship in Las Vegas?

No. Even if Norris wins and neither Piastri nor Verstappen scores, he won't have a sufficient lead to mathematically secure the title. Norris's maximum advantage over Piastri after Las Vegas can only be 49 points (415 vs. 366 in the event of a Norris victory and Piastri not scoring). With 58 points still up for grabs, the title race continues.

However, there's a twist: Norris could lose the championship lead in Las Vegas if Piastri wins and Norris scores no more than one point. In that scenario, Piastri would either be ahead by one point or tied but ahead on wins (eight to seven).

In Summary:

Before Las Vegas, here's what you need to know:

  • Verstappen is eliminated if he loses nine points or more to Norris.
  • If Verstappen finishes ahead of Norris, he stays in the title race.
  • Even if Norris doesn't finish in the top 5, Verstappen remains in contention.
  • Norris cannot win the championship in Las Vegas.
