Can the Vikings' offensive line finally come together? After a season of struggles, the Vikings are set to field their ideal starting five offensive linemen for the first time this year. This is a crucial development, and it could be the key to turning their season around. But here's where it gets interesting...
The Vikings' offensive line was exposed in the 2024 season, allowing a staggering nine sacks in a game against the Rams, courtesy of players like Jared Verse. This prompted a significant overhaul of the interior offensive line – the heart of the team's protection. (Remember, in today's NFL, every position is critical. A weak link can be ruthlessly exploited.)
The tackles, Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill, were deemed solid enough to keep. Darrisaw, unfortunately, suffered a torn ACL during a regular-season game against the Rams.
The team made some big changes in the middle. They replaced Garrett Bradbury (now with New England) at center with Ryan Kelly, a former first-round pick from the Colts. They also brought in Will Fries, also from the Colts, to play guard, and drafted Donovan Jackson in the first round to fill the other guard spot.
The plan seemed solid: Darrisaw and O’Neill on the outside, with Kelly, Fries, and Jackson inside.
But then came the setbacks. Darrisaw wasn't fully recovered, and Kelly suffered multiple concussions, landing him on injured reserve.
In a recent interview, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell revealed a surprising detail: the Week 12 game against Green Bay will be the first time this season that all five of their intended starters will be on the field together.
Will this finally be the turning point? We'll find out when the Vikings face the Packers at 1:00 p.m. ET. The Vikings, known for their unpredictable performances, often excel when they're not favored. And they're currently expected to lose to the Packers in Green Bay.
It could be a close game. The Packers' offense has struggled at home recently, averaging just 10 points per game in their last two losses. If the Vikings' revamped offensive line can provide a boost, they might just steal a win and head to Seattle with a 5-6 record, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
The alternative? A 4-7 record, and a continuation of their recent pattern: playoffs, no playoffs, playoffs, no playoffs.
